Proper metal roof insulation is critical in Houston's climate. Without it, you'll get condensation problems in winter, excessive heat transfer in summer, and rain noise during storms. With the right insulation system, a metal roof is quieter, cooler, and more energy-efficient than shingles.

Underlayment Options

Synthetic underlayment: The minimum standard. Provides a secondary weather barrier between panels and decking. We use high-temperature synthetic rated for metal roofing (standard felt degrades under metal).

Peel-and-stick self-adhering membrane: Required in TWIA windstorm zones and recommended everywhere in Houston. Seals around fastener penetrations for an additional leak barrier.

Thermal Break & Condensation Control

Metal conducts heat and cold rapidly. Without a thermal break, the underside of metal panels can reach dew point and drip condensation. Solutions include rigid foam insulation board between purlins and panels, spray foam insulation in the attic, and ventilated air gaps (batten systems) that allow airflow between the panel and decking.

Noise Reduction

With proper underlayment, solid decking (plywood or OSB), and attic insulation, a metal roof is no louder than shingles during rain. The "loud metal roof" reputation comes from old barn-style installations with no decking — direct-to-purlin with no underlayment. Modern residential metal roof installations on solid decking are quiet.
